As I think I've mentioned before, I was super sad when I found out earlier this year that Domino Magazine was folding. Well, much to my surprise and delight, a friend emailed me this morning with a link to a new online magazine, just launched today, from former Domino Magazine editors! It's called Lonny Magazine and is full of fun, creative ideas for your home. Check it out!
It's no secret to old roommates and family that I love making collages, but in the last several years I've begun to feel it's best to leave these remnants of middle school hidden in notebooks and on the back walls of medicine cabinets or closet doors. But this photo brings the inspiration board / collage to a whole new level. Break out the scissors!
I'm still in the process of chipping away at getting my new place to look exactly how I want it to look. I've been searching around for the perfect curtains for my bedroom windows (that's right - windows, plural. Don't be jealous, NYCers) and I keep coming back to these adorable flocked curtain panels from Anthropologie. Anyone who knows me knows that my interest in all things Anthropologie borders on an unhealthy obsession, but so be it - I'm going to get these curtains, damnit!
I'm posting a user/reviewer-generated picture from the website (which, incidentally, is a really awesome option when reviewing a product online), as well as one of the store's pictures. I'm thinking I'll go with the yellow/natural color. I like how the reviewer used them in a room with some black elements. I bought a pair of really cute black bedside table lamps yesterday, and I think they will blend nicely.
My dear friend J wrote this fun article for House Beautiful and mentioned my new kitchen!
When we moved into our apartment, my roommates said I could paint the walls if we lived there for more than one year. The day we re-signed the lease, I started methodically searching design blogs for paint colors and ideas. A post from Apartment Therapy — called Color Inspiration: Gray and Yellow — inspired me the most. As I mentioned in last week's article, my living room is now painted Glidden's best shade of gray, Wood Smoke, which is the same color Robert Stilin used in the 2009 Kitchen of the Year, coincidentally enough.
After being so impressed with my first foray into Apartment Therapy's color archives, I e-mailed the post to a friend who was decorating her new house in Napa Valley. While she appreciated my love of "Gray and Yellow," she decided her tastes leaned toward Color Combo: Warm Purple with Wood Tones.
Undeterred, I sent the post to another friend, who recently moved to a two-bedroom apartment on the Upper East Side. In turn, she sent me a photo of a kitchen from Color Inspiration: Turquoise, Black & White. Now, she can't stop raving about how much she loves her new black kitchen. And I can't stop smiling every time I look at my gray walls. - Jennifer Jackson
I'm about to go out for lunch; I'd better grab my biggest pair of sunnies...
So, I'm all moved into my new apartment and now begins the fun part. Well, first I have to finish unpacking, and then begins the fun part: decorating! It really is like the icing on the cake. As I think I've mentioned before, I've been obsessed with home decorating magazines for the last month or so, as I invariably am when I move to new a new place, and I've stumbled across a few fun resources.
First, there is the House Beautiful PaintBrush tool that lets you try out different paint colors in photographs of 25 different rooms, organized by type. It's been fun to try out the black paint idea I've been toying with. That idea, incidentally, has actually become more of a definite. I just need to put everything away before I open up a can of black paint...
Second is a website not unlike Polyvore which, incidentally, got a great write-up in the NY Times a few days ago. Anyway, it's called Shopstyle. The site allows you to choose from thousands of pieces of furniture and other home decorating objects of various origin and piece them together by room. You can also browse other people's designs, purchase furniture online, and comment on things you like. It's sort of like this program that I always imagine I can get my hands on that allows you to design a room the way they do on the decorating channel.
Third on my list is the Domino Book of Decorating from the same Domino Magazine that recently folded, God rest it's well-designed and organized soul. This book has been like my Bible since I first discovered it about six months ago; I love the layout, I love the designs, I love the definitions section, and I love the helpful where-to-buy-things index in the back. Buy it. Use it. Love it.
Fourth is the ever-reliable Apartment Therapy. Of particular interest to me is their Small Cool Contest, which is full of fantastic, user-friendly, space-saving ideas for apartment dwellers. If you ever start to feel disgruntled by the size of your apartment, check out their section on tiny spaces. Unless you were living in the building I just moved out of, that should make you feel a little better about your situation or, at the very least, inspire you to reorganize and spruce up your own space.
There are also countless websites and blogs with every sort of design inspiration and style available, including lots of DIY projects. So, what are you waiting for?!
